For residential and small commercial properties, there are two main systems from which you can choose: a central heating and cooling system or a mini-split system. A central HVAC system is what you typically think about when discussing AC systems. It is a ducted system with both an indoor and outdoor component that works to circulate air into and out of your home or small business. A mini-split system, also has an interior and exterior unit, but it is a much more compact system that does not require ductwork and is meant to cool or warm smaller regions of a property.
If you are replacing a central HVAC system, it is probably best to opt for a central HVAC system replacement. You have the ductwork ready to go, and you can heat or cool the entire property with one system (in most cases).
However, if you are attempting to add heat or cool air to a new home addition, office space, or any other area of your property that doesn't already have ductwork installed, a mini-split system might be the best option. It can be installed quickly and easily - and the installation costs will be significantly lower than they would be if you had to duct a new room.
